A little preparation helps your blood test go smoothly and makes sure your results are as accurate as possible. Here’s what to know before your appointment.
Check whether you need to fast
Most blood tests don’t need any preparation, but some, such as certain glucose and cholesterol tests, may require you to fast beforehand. If your test needs fasting, we’ll let you know when you book. While fasting, you can usually drink water.
Drink plenty of water
Being well hydrated makes your veins easier to find, which can make taking a sample quicker and more comfortable.
Keep taking your usual medicines
Unless you’ve been told otherwise, keep taking your medication as normal. Let us know if you take blood thinners, or supplements such as biotin, as these can affect some results.
Book a morning appointment for hormone tests
Testosterone levels are highest in the morning, so if your test includes testosterone, a morning appointment is usually recommended.
On the day
Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily
Tell us if you feel nervous or faint around needles, so we can make you comfortable
Your appointment takes around 30 minutes, including time to answer any questions
Getting your results
We send your sample to our partner lab on the day of your appointment. Most results are ready within 24 hours of reaching the lab, though some tests take up to 3 working days. We’ll email your results to you.
